AC compressor replacement cost: fix it or replace the AC?

The compressor is the most expensive part of a central air conditioner. Here’s what replacing one costs, how the warranty changes the bill and when a new system is the smarter buy.

What a compressor replacement costs

Angi’s 2026 national ranges depend mostly on the size and type of system. They’re estimates, not quotes (Angi).

  • 1.5-ton central AC: $700 to $1,300
  • 3-ton central AC: $1,000 to $2,100
  • 5-ton central AC: $1,800 to $2,600
  • Ductless mini-split: $600 to $1,000
  • Window unit: $250 to $425

What drives the bill

  • Warranty. If your old compressor still has a valid warranty, Angi says you might spend about $600 to $1,200. With an expired warranty, expect closer to $1,300 to $2,500 (Angi).
  • Labor. HVAC labor runs about $75 to $150 an hour, or a flat $300 to $900. The job usually takes four to six hours (Angi).
  • Refrigerant. Recharging the system can add $100 to $350 (Angi).
  • Timing. Angi says prices can be lower in the off-season, around September and March (Angi).

Older system? Check the refrigerant

Look at the nameplate on your outdoor unit to see which refrigerant it uses. Many older systems use HCFC-22 (R-22). The EPA says:

  • You don’t have to replace an R-22 system. New R-22 production and import ended January 1, 2020, but reclaimed R-22 is still available for repairs (EPA).
  • There’s no “drop-in” replacement for R-22. Other refrigerants won’t work well without changes to the system (EPA).
  • Don’t let anyone put propane-based “R-22a” in your AC. EPA says these flammable refrigerants aren’t approved for existing systems (EPA).

Repair or replace the whole system?

Angi says AC compressors typically last 10 to 20 years, or 8 to 10 years in hot climates. It notes that replacing an entire central air system can cost as much as $6,000 (Angi).

ENERGY STAR says to consider replacing a central AC or heat pump that’s more than 10 years old, and that properly installed ENERGY STAR equipment can save up to 20% on heating and cooling costs (ENERGY STAR).

See our AC repair-or-replace guide and heat pump guide before you sign. Check the ENERGY STAR Rebate Finder and your utility, such as ComEd’s heating and cooling discounts, for rebates on a new system.

Would a home warranty help with the next AC bill?

A home warranty is a service contract that helps pay to repair or replace some home systems and appliances. Know these numbers before you buy:

  • Price. The DC Attorney General says a basic home warranty costs $500 a year or more (DC Attorney General). NerdWallet’s average was about $876 a year (NerdWallet).
  • Service fee. You usually pay a fee for each repair visit, typically $75 or more (DC Attorney General). NerdWallet found an average of about $108 (NerdWallet).
  • Is the item covered? Some plans exclude kitchen appliances, water heaters, furnaces and other major appliances, or charge extra to cover them (DC Attorney General).
  • Caps and exclusions. Claims can be capped. Contracts can exclude wear and tear, manufacturer defects and problems from skipped maintenance. The company may repair rather than replace, and may pick the contractor (DC Attorney General).

Look closely at the HVAC cap. The DC Attorney General’s example is a plan that paid only $1,600 toward a $12,000 boiler (DC Attorney General). Compare any cap with the compressor ranges above. Don’t count on a brand-new plan to pay for something that’s already broken; read when coverage starts and what it excludes. See our home warranty cost guide.
