Find and cancel subscriptions you don’t use

Streaming services, apps, memberships and free trials that quietly renew add up. Here’s how to find them and what Illinois law says about canceling.

5 ways to cut recurring charges

Go through your statements

Look at two or three months of bank and card statements, plus app store subscriptions on your phone. List every recurring charge, including yearly ones.

Know your Illinois rights

Under the Illinois Automatic Contract Renewal Act, if you signed up online you must be able to cancel online. Free trials of 15 days or longer that turn into paid plans must send a reminder at least 3 days before the cancel deadline.

Set a reminder for every trial

When you start a free trial, add a calendar reminder a couple of days before it ends so you can decide on purpose.

Ask before you cancel

Some services offer a cheaper tier, an ad-supported plan or a pause option. Pick the one that fits, or cancel.

Use a tracking tool if it helps

Apps like Rocket Money can list your subscriptions for free. Rocket Money’s paid Premium plan, which it describes as “pay what you think is fair,” can request cancellations for you. Bill negotiation services can also ask providers for lower rates, so check how they charge before you sign up.

Common questions

Do I need an app to cancel subscriptions?

No. You can cancel directly with each company. Apps can save time finding charges, but they’re optional.

Is it safe to connect my bank account to a budgeting app?

That’s your call. Read the app’s privacy and security information first, and only connect accounts you’re comfortable sharing.

What if a company makes it hard to cancel?

Keep a record of your cancellation request. If you’re still charged, contact your card issuer about the charge, and you can file a consumer complaint with the Illinois Attorney General.
