Prices by toilet style

  • Two-piece: about $375
  • One-piece: about $800
  • Wall-mounted: about $700
  • High-level (tank on the wall above): about $700

Prices by flush type

  • Gravity flush: about $375
  • Double cyclone: about $400
  • Dual flush: about $500
  • Pressure-assisted: about $600
  • Upflush (macerating): about $1,000

Costs that can surprise you

Angi’s 2026 ranges for common extras (Angi):

  • Removing the old toilet: $50 to $200
  • New flange: $145 to $300
  • Wax ring: $50 to $200
  • New shut-off valve: $50 to $150
  • Drain line repair: about $670
  • Moving the toilet to a new spot: about $3,000
  • New flooring: $8 to $24 per square foot

Angi also notes a general contractor may add a 13% to 22% markup, so for a simple swap, hiring a plumber directly can cost less. Ask whether haul-away of the old toilet is included in the quote (Angi).

Repair or replace?

Many toilet problems are cheap fixes. EPA WaterSense says most toilet leaks come from old or worn-out flappers, an inexpensive part that’s quick to replace (EPA WaterSense). Try our running toilet guide first. Angi says to consider replacing a toilet that has cracks, wobbles, leaks or runs constantly, clogs often or is about 25 years old (Angi).

A new toilet can cut your water bill

EPA WaterSense says toilets account for nearly 30% of indoor water use, and older models can use as much as 6 gallons per flush. EPA says newer efficient designs flush with equal or superior performance. Replacing old toilets with WaterSense labeled models can cut toilet water use by 20% to 60%, which EPA puts at nearly 13,000 gallons and more than $170 a year for the average family (EPA WaterSense).

  • Look for the WaterSense label. Labeled toilets come at many price points (EPA WaterSense).
  • Ask about rebates. Some water utilities offer rebates on WaterSense toilets. Search the WaterSense Rebate Finder or call your water provider before you buy.

Would a home warranty help with the next plumbing bill?

A home warranty is a service contract that helps pay to repair or replace some home systems and appliances. Know these numbers before you buy:

  • Price. The DC Attorney General says a basic home warranty costs $500 a year or more (DC Attorney General). NerdWallet’s average was about $876 a year (NerdWallet).
  • Service fee. You usually pay a fee for each repair visit, typically $75 or more (DC Attorney General). NerdWallet found an average of about $108 (NerdWallet).
  • Is the item covered? Some plans exclude kitchen appliances, water heaters, furnaces and other major appliances, or charge extra to cover them (DC Attorney General).
  • Caps and exclusions. Claims can be capped. Contracts can exclude wear and tear, manufacturer defects and problems from skipped maintenance. The company may repair rather than replace, and may pick the contractor (DC Attorney General).

Check whether plumbing fixtures are covered at all and what the cap is. Don’t count on a brand-new plan to pay for something that’s already broken; read when coverage starts and what it excludes. See our home warranty cost guide.
