What refrigerator repairs cost
These are Angi’s national ranges for 2026. They’re estimates, not quotes. Your price depends on the brand, the part and local labor rates (Angi).
- Compressor: $300 to $800
- Control board: $200 to $500
- Ice maker: $100 to $300
- Thermostat: $100 to $250
- Defrost heater: $100 to $250
- Fan motor: $100 to $250
- Door seal (gasket): $75 to $200
Labor and service-call fees
- Labor runs about $50 to $150 an hour, and many technicians charge a minimum service fee of $75 to $125 (Angi).
- Emergency or after-hours visits can add $50 to $100 (Angi).
- Condenser coil cleaning costs about $60 to $120, and a refrigerant recharge about $150 to $300 (Angi).
Check these before you call
- The temperature setting. ENERGY STAR recommends keeping a refrigerator at 35 to 38 degrees F (ENERGY STAR).
- The door seals. Seals should be airtight. If they aren’t, replace them (ENERGY STAR).
- Recalls. Search the CPSC recall list for your brand and model. Recall remedies can include a free repair, a replacement or a refund.
Keep your food safe while you wait
FoodSafety.gov’s power-outage rules are a good guide: a refrigerator keeps food safe for up to 4 hours if you keep the door closed. After 4 hours, throw out perishable food such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs and leftovers. A full freezer holds a safe temperature for about 48 hours, or 24 hours if it’s half full and the door stays closed (FoodSafety.gov).
Repair or replace?
Angi’s rule of thumb: repair if the fridge is less than 10 years old and the repair costs less than 50% of a new model. New refrigerators typically cost $1,000 to $3,000 (Angi).
Energy use is part of the math. ENERGY STAR says an old refrigerator uses about 20% more energy than a certified model, and fridges over 15 years old could be costing about $95 a year to run. Recycling an old fridge and replacing it with an ENERGY STAR model can save about $150 over its 12-year life (ENERGY STAR). Look for rebates with the ENERGY STAR Rebate Finder.
If you replace it, recycle the old one. Federal law requires its refrigerants, oils and other compounds to be removed and recovered. ENERGY STAR lists retailer pickup, utility programs, city pickup and scrap recyclers as options (ENERGY STAR).
Would a home warranty help with the next fridge bill?
A home warranty is a service contract that helps pay to repair or replace some home systems and appliances. Know these numbers before you buy:
- Price. The DC Attorney General says a basic home warranty costs $500 a year or more (DC Attorney General). NerdWallet’s average was about $876 a year (NerdWallet).
- Service fee. You usually pay a fee for each repair visit, typically $75 or more (DC Attorney General). NerdWallet found an average of about $108 (NerdWallet).
- Is the item covered? Some plans exclude kitchen appliances, water heaters, furnaces and other major appliances, or charge extra to cover them (DC Attorney General).
- Caps and exclusions. Claims can be capped. Contracts can exclude wear and tear, manufacturer defects and problems from skipped maintenance. The company may repair rather than replace, and may pick the contractor (DC Attorney General).
Many covered repairs cost less than a year of the plan (DC Attorney General). Don’t count on a brand-new plan to pay for something that’s already broken; read when coverage starts and what it excludes. See our home warranty cost guide.
