Water softener cost: what you’ll pay to buy, install and run one

A water softener costs about $1,500 installed on average, and most systems run $200 to $6,000 depending on the type and size, according to Angi’s 2026 data. Start by finding out how hard your water is, then compare types, sizes and running costs.

Do you need a water softener?

Hard water has a lot of dissolved calcium and magnesium. USGS classifies water as soft at 0 to 60 mg/L of calcium carbonate, moderately hard at 61 to 120 mg/L, hard at 121 to 180 mg/L and very hard above 180 mg/L (USGS).

USGS says hard water isn’t a health concern, but it’s a nuisance. It leaves scale in pipes and water heaters, makes soap harder to lather and can make water heaters less efficient. Ask your local water utility for its hardness data before you buy (USGS). If your bill is the real problem, see our guide to lowering your water bill.

Water softener cost by type

These are Angi’s 2026 ranges (Angi):

  • Magnetic: $200 to $600
  • Single-tank ion exchange (salt-based): $500 to $1,700
  • Salt-free: $800 to $4,000
  • Double-tank ion exchange: $1,000 to $5,000
  • Reverse osmosis: $1,500 to $1,800 for a point-of-use unit, or $4,000 to $11,000 for a whole home

Cost by size

Softeners are rated by grain capacity. Angi’s materials-only ranges run from $300 to $500 for a 24,000-grain unit, $600 to $1,200 for 48,000 grains and $1,700 to $2,500 for 96,000 grains (Angi).

To size one, Angi multiplies the number of people in the home by 90 gallons a day, your hardness in grains per gallon and 7 days. A family of 4 with water at 10 grains per gallon needs about 25,200 grains a week (Angi).

Installation and running costs

  • Installation: $150 to $1,000, depending on the unit and how complex the job is. It usually takes 2 to 4 hours. Permit costs depend on local rules (Angi).
  • Salt: $5 to $10 per 40-pound bag, or $50 to $70 for potassium chloride (Angi).

Buy or rent?

Renting costs about $25 to $50 a month and can cut maintenance and small repair costs (Angi). If you plan to stay in your home for years, compare a few years of rent with the price to buy and install.

Get at least three quotes, and choose a model with a meter-controlled valve, which regenerates only when needed (Angi). Scale from hard water can make a water heater less efficient, so see our water heater repair cost guide if yours is struggling.

Would a home warranty help with the next water softener bill?

A home warranty is a service contract that helps pay to repair or replace some home systems and appliances. Know these numbers before you buy:

  • Price. The DC Attorney General says a basic home warranty costs $500 a year or more (DC Attorney General). NerdWallet’s average was about $876 a year (NerdWallet).
  • Service fee. You usually pay a fee for each repair visit, typically $75 or more (DC Attorney General). NerdWallet found an average of about $108 (NerdWallet).
  • Is the item covered? Some plans exclude kitchen appliances, water heaters, furnaces and other major appliances, or charge extra to cover them (DC Attorney General).
  • Caps and exclusions. Claims can be capped. Contracts can exclude wear and tear, manufacturer defects and problems from skipped maintenance. The company may repair rather than replace, and may pick the contractor (DC Attorney General).

Check whether a plan lists a water softener at all, because plans can exclude items or charge extra for them (DC Attorney General). Don’t count on a brand-new plan to pay for something that’s already broken; read when coverage starts and what it excludes. See our home warranty cost guide.
